IDIOMS (part 2)


1.      to give someone the cold shoulder
= to ignore someone
e.g.: Pam gave me the cold shoulder. Do you know why she ignored me?

2.      to go/quit cold turkey
= to suddenly and completely doing something, especially in bad habit
e.g.: I need to stop smoking. I need to go cold turkey.

3.      to get/have cold feet
= When someone suddenly doesn’t feel brave enough for something
e.g.: Don’t worry about being scared to get married tomorrow. It’s normal to have cold feet.

4.      to be out cold
= to be unconscious; to be in a deep sleep
e.g.: After working for three days without sleep, James went to bed and soon was out cold.

5.      to know the ropes
= to know how to do a job properly; to know how things work and how to get things done
e.g.: You’ve worked at the company for six months. You must know the ropes by now.

6.      to have a crush on someone
= to have strong feelings of love or affection for someone (often for a short time and with no  results)
e.g.: Last month she had a crush on Ted, but this month she has a huge crush on Sam.

7.      to fall for someone
= to begin to feel love for someone
e.g.: I think I am falling for Jess. I can’t stop thinking about him.

8.      to make up
= to become friendly with someone again after an argument
e.g.: We had a huge fight yesterday, but we made up today.

9.      to hit it off
= to get along well with someone from the first time that you meet the person
e.g.: Ben and Jane hit it off on their first date.

10.    to break up
= to end a relationship
e.g.: They broke up last week, but they are trying to remain friends.

PREFIXES

In English, “prefix” means letter or group of letters that placed in front of a word to change its meaning. In Bahasa Indonesia we may call it “imbuhan depan”. Here are some of them that you may want to know.

1.    anglo-
= anything relating to England
example: anglophile (anyone who loves anything relating to England)
2.    counter-
= opposing/ as reaction to something
example: counter-attack
3.    de-
= take something away
example: deforestation (when the trees in area are cut down)
4.    Euro-
= relating to Europe
example: Europop
5.    ill-
= in a way that is bad/ not suitable
example: ill-prepared (prepared terrribly),
               an ill-judged remark (remark that is not judged suitably)
6.    mega (informal)
= extremely
example: megarich (super rich)
= one million
example: oneMB
7.    milli
= a thousandth
example: millisecond
8.    neo-
= new
example: neo-fascist
9.    omni-
=everywhere/ everything
example: omnipresent, omniscient
10. out-
= more/ than better than
example: to outgrow, to outnumber,
                to outdo someone (showing you are better than someone)
11. photo-
= connected with/ produced by light
example: photosensitive, photosynthesis
12. pseudo-
= false
example: a pseudonym (a false name used esp. by a writer)
                a pseudo-academic
13. retro-
= looking at/ copying the past
example: retrograde, retrospective
14. under-
= not enough
example: undercooked potatoes, underprivileged children

IDIOMS


1.       To get one’s foot in the door
= to get an opening/ promising opportunity
= to start working at a low level, hoping to progress
Example: It’s not easy to get your foot in the door at the company.
2.       On a shoestring
= with very little money; on a very tight budget
Example: Jim started his company on a shoestring, but now it is a multimillion-dollar company.
3.       To jump through hoops
= to do a lot of difficult things before you are allowed to have or do something you want.
Example: At work, Sam had to jump through hoops before he was allowed to manage the best project.
4.       To clear the air
= to remove hidden resentment1
= to remove the bad feelings between people
Example:
-          Jade has been mad at me, but I don’t know why. I want to clear the air, so I hope she’ll meet me to talk.
-          My colleagues were upset because two people were fired last week. Our boss called a meeting to clear the air. Now, the office environment is back to normal.
5.       To jump on the bandwagon
= to seize the opportunity and do something when it’s already succesfull or fashionable.
Example: Having short hair is now popular! I’m going to jump on the bandwagon and go to the hairdresser, too!
6.       To hit the roof
= to become very angry
Example: When I found Tom crashed my car, I hit the roof.
7.       To smoke like a chimney
= to smoke a lot
Example: Jeff smokes like a chimney. I worry about his health.
8.      To go out the window
= to no longer exist; to disappear2
Example: His diet went out the window during the holidays.
9.       To cry over spilled milk
= to be unhappy because of a past event that cannot be changed
Example: There’s no use worrying about a test you didn’t pass. You can’t make it up, so stop crying over spilled milk
10.   To cry uncle
= to admit3 defeat4
Example: Larry and Nicholas were wrestling on the floor, and Larry pinned Nicholas down5. When Nicholas was ready to admit defeat, he cried uncle.
11.   Crocodile tears
= false/ exaggerated6 tears
Example: I don’t believe Tommy really hurt himself when he fell. I think he was crying crocodile tears just to get attention.
12.   To cry wolf
= to raise a false alarm or exaggerate so often that one is no longer believed
Example: Every Friday, that man comes to the police station and says he thinks he has been robbed, but when we get to his house, there is never anything missing. I think he’s just crying wolf. You can’t believe him anymore.
